The 2030 Water Resources Group receives endorsement to continue until 2017

The 2030 WRG will continue working to address water crises globally for another three years.

The World Economic Forum’s 2014 Global Risk Report, has ranked Water Crises as the 3rd Most potentially impactful global risk. The report assesses 31 risks that are global in nature and have the potential to cause significant negative impacts across entire industries and countries. More than 1,000 experts participating in the report have stated that Water crises may potentially have the biggest impact on systems and countries over the course of the next 10 years. This is the 3rd year now that Water is ranked amongst the 5 most important risks for the future.

The 2030 Water Resources Group (2030 WRG) mission is to address global water crises based on the understanding that governments, the private sector, and civil society have a common interest in the sustainable management of water resources. An unsustainable use of water resources will negatively impact economic development, people and ecosystems.

During its 2nd Governing Council meeting, the 2030 WRG partners and stakeholders endorsed its Secretariat to continue broadening, replicating and achieving scale in its efforts to increase water security in developing countries for the next three years.

‘This next phase of work will allow us to become a more relevant player in the global efforts to address water withdrawals exceeding sustainable supply, the main driver of risks for water security’ declared Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, Chairman of the 2030 Water Resources Group.

The decision comes after more than two years of achievements and progress collaborating with the governments and stakeholders in the State of Karnataka (India), India, Mexico, and South Africa where the 2030 WRG has established a partnership that develops concrete proposals to reduce water losses and use water more efficiently in cities, mines and agriculture.

‘The support of our public, private and civil society partners have been paramount for the success and work progress of the 2030 WRG initiative. Now is time to expand our work to other countries in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America’ stated Mr. Anders Berntell, Executive Director of the 2030 Water Resources Group.

In the last year, the 2030 WRG has now also engaged with Governments and stakeholders in Mongolia, Peru and Tanzania in establishing similar partnerships that will lead governments to concrete action on the ground and collective actions to close the gap between long-term water resource needs and water resource availability in a sustainable and equitable manner.
