European equity markets are trading little changed this morning with markets in Asia and the US both closing mixed and very little fresh news out overnight. Focus in Europe today will be on Italy, where consumer confidence and retail sales figures are scheduled for release both are expected to remain at low levels but with some stabilization visible main factor for the subdued reading remain tough austerity measures pressuring growth. Furthermore Italy will be auctioning off 9 Billion Euros of 181 day T-Bills which shouldn’t pose much of a problem due to the short maturity and consequently rather low risk and finally German Chancellor Merkel will be hosting Italian Premier Monti in Berlin holding once again talks about the current crisis and ways how to restart growth in Europe. In the afternoon traders will have a close look at the second reading of the US 2Q GDP figures, with the release of the Beige Book taking centre stage in the early evening.

Overall markets are once again expected to be range-bound with basically everybody waiting for the release of the Beige Book this evening and the start of the Jackson Hole Economic policy symposium on Friday, hoping to receive further clues on just how imminent further stimulus measures by the Fed and other central banks around the world are. Typically it wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if markets will be staging attempts to test the boundaries of the current trading range as growing expectations for help by major central banks around the world is battling it out with occasionally resurfacing doubts if this help will indeed materialize and if it does if it will be as effective as many currently hope.
