For many chief financial officers, taking on a non-executive director role makes a lot of sense. Board service represents a valuable opportunity for a CFO to gain boardroom experience beyond his own company. Before making the leap however, it is important to understand what makes a successful candidate.

Every board is different by virtue of the company and the individuals it comprises. Most serving executives benefit from a different perspective and approach that they can selectively and appropriately bring back to their day job. Understanding the reality of the information asymmetry that exists between executives and non-executives helps CFOs interact better with the chair of audit committee and other board members. Most existing FTSE100 CFOs that have a non-executive role say they are more effective communicators with their audit committees and boards after having taken up such a role.
