Mais la numérisation gagne tous les aspects de notre vie et transforme également nos modes de paiement. Dans cette nouvelle ère, un euro numérique garantirait que les habitants de la zone euro puissent bénéficier d’un moyen de paiement gratuit, simple, universellement accepté, sans risque et crédible. Un euro numérique existerait parallèlement aux espèces, sans les remplacer. Les Européens auraient ainsi un choix élargi d’instruments et pourraient effectuer leurs paiements plus facilement, ce qui renforcerait l’inclusion financière.

L’Eurosystème veillera à ce que chacun dispose toujours de billets et pièces en euros, dans l’ensemble de la zone euro.
