Consumer blockchain protection discussed in Bretton Woods 2016

Consumers’ Research to Host Second Annual Blockchain/Bitcoin Workshop at Bretton Woods

Consumers’ Research, the nation’s oldest consumer organization, will host Bretton Woods 2016 from Sunday, July 10 – Wednesday, July 13 in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. This is the second annual Bretton Woods workshop held by Consumers’ Research to study bitcoin and blockchain technologies. The goal of this year’s workshop is to produce guiding principles on consumer protection best practices for blockchain businesses. Workshop participants will include representatives from relevant legislative and regulatory bodies, as well as a diverse array of fintech, blockchain, and traditional financial industry experts.

“Distributed ledgers have the potential to impact money, trade, and access to banking more than any development in generations,” says Joe Colangelo, Executive Director of Consumers’ Research. “However, for the technology to realize its potential, consumers need to trust it, which means knowing that their privacy is protected and their wealth is secure. This collaboration will produce a model for bitcoin and blockchain-based companies that also addresses the concerns of regulatory entities.”

This unique event will feature honest and direct conversation in a retreat-like atmosphere. While the main product output will focus on consumer protection, there will be discussion on the state of innovation and other key concerns in the fintech industry. Participants at this year’s workshop include representatives from: The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the U.S. House of Representatives, Microsoft, the Mercatus Center, Coin Center, MIT Media Lab, Bloq, CoinStructive, Chainalysis, and a number of other entities. Following the conference, the product will be shared with representatives of regulatory bodies, industry leaders, and policy experts in a collaborative effort to build consensus around the practices recommended. The final product will be unveiled at Money 2020 in October, 2016.

During Bretton Woods 2015, experts convened for a comprehensive discussion about the state of bitcoin and blockchain technologies, as well as the opportunities presented and obstacles faced by these technologies.

The meetings produced a groundbreaking white paper, available here: http://consumersresearch.org/bretton-woods-2015-white-paper/
