The asset manager is just the latest financial institution to consider ways in which the technology, which is the basis for the online ledger behind the bitcoin digital currency, might be used in a range of ways to make finance more efficient, and secure.

Earlier this month, State Street announced it is one of nine banks working with the R3 blockchain consortium. Bank of New York Mellon Corp.BK +1.20%, which is not part of the R3 group, is experimenting with blockchain, too.
